Spaying or neutering your pet is a common veterinary surgery, but that doesn’t mean it’s simple. These procedures are just as invasive for animals as similar surgeries are for humans, and the care your pet receives before, during, and after matters. At Animal Hospital of Ovilla, we believe your pet deserves the same level of attention and monitoring you’d expect for any family member undergoing surgery. That’s why our spay and neuter protocols go above and beyond.
Why Our Approach Is Different
You may find lower prices elsewhere, and we understand that cost matters. But not all spay and neuter services are created equal. Our protocols are designed to ensure the safest possible experience and smoothest recovery for your pet.
Before Surgery
- We require up-to-date vaccines to protect your pet (and others) from disease while in our care.
- If you haven’t met the surgeon, they’ll introduce themselves and answer any questions before the procedure.
- Pets over one year of age are required to have pre-anesthetic blood work to screen for underlying conditions like liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or anemia. We recommend testing for younger pets as well.
During Surgery
- Every patient receives an IV catheter and fluids for hydration, to maintain stable blood pressure, and for quick access in an emergency.
- We continuously monitor blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, CO2, EKG, and respiration using medical-grade equipment.
- Heated surgical tables help maintain safe body temperature throughout the procedure.
- A trained technician closely monitors your pet before, during, and after surgery.
- We follow a specialized anesthesia protocol for brachycephalic breeds like bulldogs and pugs, who face higher risks during sedation.
- Pre-surgical calming medication helps ease your pet into anesthesia.
- Pain medication is administered before and after surgery, customized to your pet and procedure.
After Surgery
- Canine and feline spay patients, as well as canine neuter patients, stay overnight for continued monitoring and pain management.
- We use cold laser therapy to promote healing at the incision site.
- You’ll receive a phone call after surgery with an update on how everything went.
- Discharge appointments ensure you get aftercare instructions in person, with time for questions.
- You’ll go home with detailed written instructions and access to our surgical technicians during business hours if any concerns arise.
- We follow up by phone to check on your pet’s recovery.
- A suture removal appointment allows us to evaluate healing and ensure everything looks great.
