Exotic Pet Care

Not every pet has four legs and fur — and not every vet knows how to care for the ones that don’t! At Animal Hospital of Ovilla, we welcome pets of all kinds, including reptiles, birds, rodents, and small mammals. Our veterinarians are experienced in treating a wide variety of species and are proud members of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV), the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV), and the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV).

Who Do We See?

We’re experienced in caring for dogs and cats, as well as lizards, snakes, tortoises, and other reptiles; parakeets, parrots, chickens, ducks, and other birds; hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, and other rodents; and ferrets, hedgehogs, and other small mammals. If you have a different kind of pet, just call and ask if we can see them — we’ve even treated kangaroos!

Specialized Care for Unique Pets

Exotic pets have unique healthcare needs that differ significantly from cats and dogs. Our team stays current with the latest advances in exotic animal medicine to provide the highest standard of care for these special patients. We understand the specific anatomy, physiology, and behavior of various species and use that knowledge to develop effective treatment plans.

Proper habitat, nutrition, and husbandry are crucial for exotic pet health. During wellness visits, we’ll assess your pet’s current condition and provide guidance on creating the optimal environment for their specific needs. This preventive approach helps prevent common health issues affecting exotic species.
